  1. This garden was in use for Dig for Victory during the Second World War. I spent many hours there between Junior and Senior school work. Great days!

  2. Yes Mr Martin was a character who lived into his nineties. Always wore a Harris Tweed coat & a cheery smile. Once took the class to Clowne Abattoir & we watched pigs being processed! I arrived home that day to find Mum had cooked me bacon & tomatoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. In this garden, between 1961 and 1965, we did something called ‘rural science; with Mr. Martin. In reality it was gardening, but I did win a prize for growing potatoes – something I have never done since [prize or potatoes]. ‘Science’ for secondary school kids – the factory fodder of the future.
