MEMORIES

Margaret Wood (nee Plant) has recently put a message on our website.

Margaret and her family had a fish and chip shop at the top of High Street for many years.

I am sure many of you remember the fish and chip shop and have memories you could share with us on the Memory Bank.

  1. Hi Margaret, I used to live at 97 High Street, in the 1950’s there were lots of small shops, Walkers a general store, opposite the Blacksmiths pub (now demolished), Marriotts shop just a bit further up on the left, then Plants fish and chip shop, below that was Mrs Baines sweet shop and next door but two to us Wards green grocers. There were also lots more shops down the hill on Bridge Street, I remember Farrands grocers shop, the flour, butter, rice etc was loose in large drums, they weighed out what you wanted into strong brown paper bags they used butter pats to shape up the butter, happy carefree days
