KILLAMARSH CO-OPERATIVE

We are currently researching the history of the Co-operative in Killamarsh.

Does anyone have any photographs relating to the Co-op, that is buildings or people who worked there etc, which we could borrow to copy?

Did you or any members of your family work at the Co-op and do you have any stories to tell?

If you can help you can contact us by emailing secretary@killamarsh.org or telephone 0114 2484812.

We look forward to hearing from you.

  1. i worked at killamarsh coop in the grocery warehouse at 53 bridge street, I learnt to drive by having the L plates on one of the milk vans the one which Judy used to drive on the round that ended in mosbrough, I used to do grocery deliveries from bridge street, norwood, white city, halfway, a mobile also at Halfway, mosbrough, Wales Bar, west end and highmoor branches, I stayed with them until they where taken over by B&C as a grocery delivery driver with an old ambulance driver who worked for the coop his name was bob skelton , a old school mate of mine Angela Reed worked at the Off Licence branch at the bottom of bridge street, I was then given a new commer van and allowed to garage behind the coop chemist at the bottom of bridge street, Walter Morris JP was the last secretary, branch closures happened very quickly under B & C, the mobile shop with Tom based at Mr Taylors Halfway branch was very quickly stopped as was our deliveries from Halfway to Beighton, the bakery, butchery, and milk depts. became early victims of cuts, the warehouse at bridge street wasn’t needed as deliveries came from Coleman road Darnall Sheffield. Sandy Hopkinson was both branch manager at station rd mosbrough & a director of the society. Cyril Rowbottom was grocery manager for the society, Mr Armstrong ran the Bridge street coop, the coop was really the centre of just about everything in Killamarsh then, on Sheffield road a big furniture department was situated, I also recall a dry cleaning department hallway up bridge street. I remember a meeting room over the coop where a meeting was held to decid on a merger with Eckington CooP Society, the story went that neither Walter Morris or Mr Barrett at Eckington would agree to step down and the project failed, Eckington went with Chesterfield Coop. I am sure other people must remember a bit more.
