Yes correct a Lampman. Every signal lamp attended to once a week although only bigger stations/yards/Junction had full time lampmen. (this was my first job when I started on the railway), otherwise one of the porters (or signalmen on overtime in remote locations) would do it. Surprised Mr Cox is (apparently) walking with his back to the traffic, a very big no no on the railway. Plenty of railwaymen have been killed doing just that. You should walk on the path (the ‘cess’) to the right. Still, a good picture all the same.
